Breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin, raises the nipple and reshapes the breast so it sits higher and feels lighter. It is mainly done to ease back, neck and shoulder pain, bra-strap grooves and skin irritation under the breasts, and many people also value the better proportion. In Turkey, a typical package costs about €2,800–€5,000, and most patients plan 6–8 days in the country.
What breast reduction is and how it works
Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon removes a planned wedge of skin and breast tissue, then moves the nipple and areola higher while keeping them attached to a stalk of tissue — the pedicle — that carries their blood and nerve supply. The remaining tissue is shaped into a smaller, lifted breast and closed in layers. The operation usually takes 2–3 hours, and most people stay in hospital for 1–2 nights. Because a reduction also lifts the breast, it overlaps with a breast lift; the difference is that a lift mainly removes skin, while a reduction removes volume too.
Breastfeeding and nipple sensation
How the nipple is moved matters. When it stays connected to a column of breast tissue underneath, milk ducts and nerves are partly preserved. A 2017 systematic review of 51 studies found a median breastfeeding success of 4% when this column was not preserved, 75% with partial and 100% with full preservation, although results varied widely between studies. Temporary numbness is common and usually resolves within 12–18 months, but permanent changes can occur. For very large reductions the surgeon may need a free nipple graft, which leaves the nipple without sensation and makes breastfeeding very unlikely.
Anchor, vertical and liposuction-only techniques
| Technique | Scar pattern | Usually suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Anchor / Wise pattern (inverted-T) | Around the areola, down the front of the breast and along the crease beneath it | Large reductions, marked sagging or a nipple that must move a long way |
| Vertical (lollipop or short-scar) | Around the areola and straight down to the crease | Small to moderate reductions; the lower end can pucker and occasionally needs a touch-up |
| Liposuction-only reduction | A few small puncture marks | Mainly fatty breasts needing a mild to moderate reduction, with little excess skin; it cannot reposition the nipple |
| Free nipple graft (with an anchor pattern) | As the anchor pattern; the nipple is removed and re-attached as a graft | Very large breasts where the nipple's blood supply would be at risk; sensation is lost |
The pedicle (superomedial, inferior or superior) and the scar pattern are chosen together, based on your anatomy and the size of the reduction.
Who is a good candidate
- Women whose breast size causes back, neck or shoulder pain, bra-strap grooves or rashes under the breasts, or limits exercise
- Adults with fully developed breasts who are at or near a stable weight
- Non-smokers, or people willing to stop well before and after surgery
- People with realistic expectations: your breasts will be smaller, but no surgeon can promise an exact cup size
- Men with enlarged breast tissue need a different operation — see gynecomastia surgery
It is usually better to wait if you plan major weight loss or a pregnancy soon, because both change breast size. People with uncontrolled diabetes or other conditions that impair healing need careful assessment, and anyone who strongly wants to breastfeed in future should discuss the technique before booking.

The procedure step by step
Consultation and planning
The surgeon measures your breasts, discusses your target size and scar pattern and reviews your health. Depending on your age and history, a breast scan may be requested first.
Marking and anaesthesia
Incision lines are drawn while you stand; the operation is then done under general anaesthesia.
Reduction and nipple repositioning
Excess tissue and skin are removed and the nipple is moved up on its pedicle; liposuction may refine the sides of the chest.
Shaping and closure
The breast is shaped with deep dissolvable stitches, and thin drains may be placed for a day or two.
Support bra and discharge
You wake in a supportive bra and usually leave hospital after 1–2 nights, with a wound check before you fly.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–2
Hospital and drains
Soreness and tightness are expected and controlled with painkillers. Drains, if used, usually come out after 1–2 days.
Week 1
Rest and first check
Walk regularly but avoid lifting. The surgeon checks your wounds and dressings before clearing you to fly.
Weeks 2–3
Back to desk work
Many people return to office work; drive only once wearing a seatbelt is comfortable.
Weeks 4–6
Gradual activity
Keep wearing a support bra and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for up to six weeks, or as advised.
Months 3–18
Settling and scars
Most swelling settles in about three months. Scars and any numbness keep improving for a year or more.
Results and how long they last
Many people notice relief from the weight soon after surgery, and the final shape shows once swelling settles, typically over three to six months. The reduction itself is long-lasting: if your weight stays stable, the removed tissue does not grow back. Breasts still age, and pregnancy, weight change and hormones can alter their size and shape, so some women later choose a breast lift or combine breast and body surgery in a mommy makeover. Keep up routine breast checks and screening afterwards.
Risks and how to reduce them
- Wound-healing problems, especially where the vertical and crease scars meet (the T-junction)
- Thick, raised or widened scars, and differences between the breasts or nipples
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent
- Reduced ability to breastfeed — very unlikely after a free nipple graft
- Fat necrosis (firm lumps where fatty tissue loses its blood supply) and, rarely, partial or total loss of the nipple
- Bleeding (haematoma), fluid collection, infection and blood clots, as with any major operation
Smoking, weight and flying
Smoking and a higher BMI both raise the risk of skin and fat necrosis and slow healing. Stop smoking and nicotine products well before surgery, as your surgeon advises, and do not fly home until you have been examined. Ask in advance how the clinic handles complications that appear after you return home.

Recommended time in Turkey
| Usually included | Often extra — check your quote |
|---|---|
| Surgeon and anaesthetist fees | Flights and extra hotel nights |
| Hospital stay (1–2 nights) and operating-theatre costs | Extra liposuction or combined procedures |
| Pre-operative blood tests and anaesthetic assessment | Breast imaging, if required |
| Medication, dressings and a post-operative support bra | Revision surgery — ask for the written policy |
| Hotel, transfers and an interpreter or coordinator | Follow-up care and dressings back home |
These are indicative 2026 ranges: the final price depends on the surgeon, hospital, technique and how much tissue is removed, so always ask for a written, itemised quote. For comparison, the NHS puts private breast reduction in the UK at around £6,500, before consultations and follow-up care. You can get free quotes from several clinics and compare them like for like.
Choosing a clinic safely
- An accredited, licensed hospital with an anaesthetist and intensive-care back-up
- A specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery registered in Turkey — ask for the specialty certificate and how often they perform reductions
- A facility or agency holding the Ministry of Health's international health-tourism authorisation (Uluslararası Sağlık Turizmi Yetki Belgesi)
- A written quote that covers aftercare, complications and the revision policy
- Realistic before-and-after photos of the surgeon's own patients with a similar starting point
- Red flags: 'scarless' promises, a promised cup size, or pressure to pay a deposit before a surgeon has reviewed your case
Plan your aftercare at home
Before you travel, arrange for a GP or practice nurse at home to check your wounds if needed, and ask the clinic for your operation notes and a direct way to reach the surgeon. If you also want body contouring, ask whether liposuction is better done at the same time or separately.
A good breast reduction is judged by how you feel months later — lighter, freer and able to move — not just by cup size. Choose the surgeon and technique that fit your body and your plans for the future.

Frequently asked questions
A typical 2026 package costs about €2,800–€5,000, usually including surgery, 1–2 nights in hospital, hotel and transfers. The price depends on the surgeon, hospital and technique. For comparison, the NHS puts private breast reduction in the UK at around £6,500, before consultations and follow-up.
Many women can, but it is not certain. Techniques that keep the nipple attached to a column of breast tissue preserve breastfeeding much better, while a free nipple graft makes it very unlikely. If you plan to have children, discuss the technique with your surgeon — or consider waiting.
Temporary numbness is common and usually resolves within 12–18 months. Permanent changes in sensation can happen, and a free nipple graft leaves the nipple without sensation.
An anchor-pattern reduction leaves a scar around the areola, a vertical scar and one in the breast crease; a vertical (lollipop) reduction avoids the crease scar. Scars are permanent but usually fade and can be hidden by a bra or most swimwear.
Sometimes. Liposuction alone can give a mild to moderate reduction in mainly fatty breasts with little excess skin, but it cannot reposition the nipple or fully reshape the breast. Younger women with denser, glandular breasts are usually not suitable.
Plan for about 6–8 days: surgery, 1–2 nights in hospital, drain removal and a final wound check before flying. Complications or a long-haul flight may mean staying a little longer.
The removed tissue does not grow back, and breast size stays fairly stable if your weight does. Pregnancy, weight gain, hormones and ageing can still change breast size and shape over time.
Enlarged male breasts are treated with gynecomastia surgery, which removes glandular tissue and fat, usually through smaller incisions than a female breast reduction.
