Gynecomastia — enlarged male breast tissue — is far more common than most men realise, and it is a genuine reason many travel to Turkey for surgery. It is a real medical procedure under general anaesthetic or sedation, not a cosmetic afterthought, and clinics that handle it well treat it discreetly and clinically, focused on restoring a flatter, more masculine chest contour.
What gynecomastia surgery treats
The key is what your chest is actually made of. Glandular gynecomastia is firm breast tissue that diet and exercise cannot shift, while fatty enlargement (sometimes called pseudogynecomastia) responds partly to weight loss. Most men have a mix. Surgery removes the excess — glandular tissue by excision and fatty tissue by liposuction — so a proper diagnosis of the tissue type is the first step to the right plan.
Techniques and grades
| Type | What it is | Usual approach |
|---|---|---|
| Fatty (pseudogynecomastia) | Excess fat, softer to the touch | Liposuction alone often enough |
| Glandular | Firm breast tissue behind the nipple | Surgical excision of the gland |
| Mixed | Both fat and gland together | Liposuction plus gland excision |
| Severe with loose skin | Large enlargement with sagging skin | Excision plus skin tightening; longer scars |
Your surgeon grades the severity and tissue type to choose the least invasive effective technique.
Who is a good candidate
- Adult men with persistent chest enlargement that has not settled on its own
- Those at a stable weight, since major weight change afterwards can alter the result
- Non-smokers, or those willing to stop for several weeks to protect healing
- Men whose enlargement is not caused by an untreated medical condition or medication that should be addressed first
- Those bothered enough by the appearance to accept small scars and a recovery period
Step by step: the operation

Online consultation
You share photos and history; the surgeon estimates whether the tissue is fatty, glandular or mixed and whether any medical check is needed first.
Arrival and assessment
In Turkey you have a face-to-face examination and blood tests, and an anaesthetic review before the plan is confirmed.
Surgery
Usually one to two hours under general anaesthetic or sedation. Fatty tissue is removed by liposuction and glandular tissue through a small incision at the edge of the areola.
Recovery and garment
You are fitted with a compression vest to reduce swelling and support the chest, and monitored before discharge.
Review before flying
A follow-up check confirms the wounds and swelling are settling before you are cleared to travel home.
Recovery, week by week
Days 1–3
Sore and swollen
The chest feels bruised and tight under a compression vest. Pain is usually mild to moderate and controlled with medication.
Week 1
Back to desk work
Many return to light, non-physical work. The compression vest is worn continuously and lifting is avoided.
Weeks 2–4
Bruising fades
Swelling and bruising settle noticeably; everyday movement is comfortable but no gym or chest exercise yet.
Weeks 4–6
Gradual exercise
Most men are cleared to build back up to exercise, including chest workouts, as swelling continues to fall.
Months 3–6
Final contour
Residual swelling resolves and small scars fade, revealing the settled, flatter chest shape.
Results and permanence
Removing glandular tissue gives a permanent result — the gland does not grow back — and most men are highly satisfied with a flatter, firmer chest. Honesty still matters: significant weight gain can add fat back to the area, scars around the areola are permanent though usually small and discreet, and very occasionally minor asymmetry or a small contour irregularity needs a touch-up. If an untreated hormonal or medication cause is ignored, fatty enlargement can partly return.

Choosing a clinic safely
- Confirm a board-certified plastic surgeon performs the operation, not a non-surgical technician
- Ask whether your case is fatty, glandular or mixed, and how each is being treated
- Check the surgery is in an accredited hospital with proper anaesthetic cover
- Ask that glandular tissue is properly excised, not just liposuctioned, if you have a firm disc behind the nipple
- Clarify what revision cover applies if there is asymmetry or a contour dip
- Be wary of very cheap 'lipo-only' offers that ignore the gland and leave a bump
Liposuction alone can leave the gland behind
If you have true glandular tissue, liposuction on its own often leaves a firm disc behind the nipple, and cut-price 'lipo-only' packages can end in disappointment or a second operation. Enlargement can also signal an underlying medical or medication issue that deserves a check first. As with any surgery, stay 5–7 days and get clearance before flying to reduce DVT (blood clot) risk.
Medical disclaimer
This page is general information, not medical advice. Only a qualified surgeon who examines you in person can confirm the tissue type, rule out an underlying cause, and decide whether surgery is right for you.
Good gynecomastia surgery is about diagnosis first — treating the gland and the fat correctly is what turns a flat chest into a lasting result.
