A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a popular reason to travel to Turkey for people whose breasts have dropped after weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding or simply time. It is surgery under general anaesthetic that repositions the breast rather than a non-surgical tightening — and understanding that difference is the first step to a good decision.

What a breast lift actually does

A lift raises the breast and moves the nipple to a higher, more youthful position; it removes stretched skin and tightens the remaining tissue. Crucially, a lift on its own does not add much volume. If you also want to be fuller, an implant is added — if you want to be smaller, tissue is removed. Being clear about position versus volume is the key to choosing the right operation.

Lift, augmentation or both?

GoalRight procedureWhat to expect
Breasts sit low, skin loose, size fineBreast lift aloneHigher, firmer shape with the same volume; scars but no implant
Low position and you want more fullnessLift plus augmentationRepositioned and larger; adds implant risks and cost
Low position and you want less bulkLift plus reductionHigher and smaller; more extensive scars
Good position, just want volumeAugmentation aloneA lift may not be needed at all

A surgeon assesses your skin quality and nipple position to advise which of these fits you.

Who is a good candidate

  • Adults whose breasts have sagged and whose nipples point downwards or sit below the fold
  • Those who have finished having children, since future pregnancy can undo the result
  • Non-smokers, or those willing to stop — smoking greatly raises the risk of poor scarring and nipple problems
  • People at a stable weight with realistic expectations about scars
  • Not ideal if you are planning major weight loss or more pregnancies soon

Step by step: the operation

1

Online consultation

You share photos and history; the surgeon estimates the degree of sag and whether an implant or reduction is also needed.

2

Arrival and marking

In Turkey the surgeon examines you standing up and draws the planned incisions, then blood tests and anaesthetic review follow.

3

Surgery under general anaesthetic

The operation usually takes two to three hours. Excess skin is removed, the tissue reshaped and the nipple repositioned.

4

Overnight monitoring

You typically stay one night so the team can watch circulation to the nipple and manage pain.

5

Review and discharge

A surgical bra, wound care instructions and a follow-up check before you return to your hotel.

Recovery, week by week

  1. Days 1–3

    Swollen and tender

Breasts feel tight and bruised. Pain is controlled with medication and you rest with limited arm movement.

  2. Week 1

    Light activity

Many return to desk work. A support bra is worn day and night and lifting is avoided.

  3. Weeks 2–4

    Bruising fades

Swelling settles and everyday movement is comfortable, but no gym, running or lifting yet.

  4. Weeks 4–6

    Gradual exercise

Most patients are cleared to build back up to exercise; scars are still red and firm.

  5. Months 3–12

    Scars mature

Shape settles over months, and scars slowly flatten and fade — though they never disappear entirely.

Results, scars and longevity

A lift produces a lasting improvement in shape, but honesty is essential on two points. First, the scars are permanent — usually around the nipple, down the front and along the fold — and how well they fade depends on your skin and aftercare. Second, gravity, ageing, weight change and future pregnancy will gradually cause some renewed sagging over the years. Most patients are very satisfied, but nobody stays exactly as they look at three months forever.

Choosing a clinic safely

  • Confirm a board-certified plastic surgeon will perform the lift, and see their before-and-after scar results
  • Ask exactly which incision pattern they plan, and where your scars will sit
  • Check the operation is in an accredited hospital with proper anaesthetic cover
  • Clarify in writing whether an implant is included or an added cost
  • Ask how revision is handled if a scar heals poorly or the shape drops
  • Avoid clinics that promise scar-free results — no lift is scarless

No breast lift is scarless

Any clinic promising an invisible or scar-free lift is misleading you. Smoking, an unaccredited theatre or an unnamed surgeon all raise the risk of wound-healing problems and nipple loss. As with any surgery, plan to stay 5–7 days and get medical clearance before flying to reduce the risk of DVT (blood clots).

Medical disclaimer

This page is general information, not medical advice. Only a qualified surgeon who examines you in person can confirm whether a lift, an augmentation or a combination is right for your breasts.

A lift is about position, not size — the honest question is where your breast should sit, and whether you also want it fuller or smaller.
