A lower body lift — also called a belt lipectomy or circumferential body lift — removes the loose skin that hangs around the lower trunk after massive weight loss, whether after bariatric surgery or diet. In one operation it tightens the abdomen, lifts the buttocks and outer thighs and removes rolls over the hips and lower back. It is a major operation: in Turkey a package typically costs €4,500–€8,000, and you should plan 10–14 days in the country.
What a body lift is and how it works
After major weight loss, stretched skin rarely shrinks back. The excess usually wraps around the body, creating an overhang, flank and back rolls and flat, sagging buttocks. A lower body lift removes a full belt of skin and fat around the lower trunk and lifts the tissue beneath it. The scar runs all the way around — low at the front, where underwear can hide it, and near the waist or the top of the buttock crease at the back. Because the surgeon works on both the back and the front, you are turned during the operation, which takes several hours.
Body lift or tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck treats only the front of the abdomen. If your loose skin is mainly there, it may be all you need, with a shorter scar and an easier recovery. If the skin continues around the flanks and back, a tummy tuck alone leaves bulges at the scar ends and untreated back rolls — that is where a circumferential lift makes sense.
Types of lower body lift
| Technique | Where the back scar sits | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Belt lipectomy | Higher, around the waist above the hip bones | Back and hip rolls; a more defined waist |
| Lower body lift | Lower, near the top of the buttock crease | Sagging buttocks and outer thighs |
| Lower body lift with buttock auto-augmentation | As for a lower body lift | Flat buttocks: some of your own tissue is kept and folded in for volume |
| Upper body lift (separate operation) | Along the bra line and chest sides | Upper back and bra-line rolls, often with breast surgery |
Surgeons often blend these techniques; ask exactly where your scar will lie.
Most people who have lost a great deal of weight also have loose skin on the arms, thighs, breasts or upper back. Doing everything at once would mean a very long anaesthetic, so surgeons usually stage the work: the lower body first, the upper body — such as an arm lift or breast lift — often around six months later, and an inner thigh lift frequently last.
Who is a good candidate
- Adults with significant loose skin around the whole lower trunk, usually after massive weight loss
- A stable weight: the ASPS advises a stable, sustainable weight for at least 6–12 months, and after bariatric surgery weight loss usually levels off within 18–24 months
- A body mass index (BMI) close to your goal — a higher BMI before surgery is linked with more complications
- Non-smokers, or people who stopped well before surgery
- Good nutrition, confirmed by blood tests for anaemia, protein and vitamin levels — especially after bariatric surgery
- Realistic expectations: a better contour in exchange for a long, permanent scar
Who should wait or consider something else

- People who are still losing weight or plan a pregnancy
- Anyone whose loose skin is limited to the front of the abdomen — a tummy tuck may be enough
- People bothered mainly by fat rather than loose skin — further weight loss or liposuction may help more
- Active smokers, and people with untreated heart, lung or blood-clotting problems
The procedure step by step
Assessment and blood tests
Weight history, blood tests and a blood-clot risk assessment; markings are made while you stand.
General anaesthesia and clot prevention
You are fully asleep. Compression devices on the legs and, usually, blood-thinning injections lower the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
Back and sides
With you lying on your front or side, the surgeon removes the excess skin across the back and hips and lifts the buttocks and outer thighs.
The front
You are turned onto your back, and the abdominal part is completed like an extended tummy tuck, often with muscle tightening and a repositioned navel.
Drains and garment
Drains are placed to remove fluid, the long incision is closed in layers and a compression garment is fitted.
Hospital stay
Most patients stay 1–3 nights in hospital and are helped to get up and walk as early as the surgeon allows.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
In hospital
Pain relief, drains, a compression garment and early walking, slightly bent at the waist to protect the incision.
Days 7–14
Drains out, check before flying
Drains usually stay 7–10 days, depending on output. Bending is limited for about two weeks, and your surgeon checks the wounds before you fly home.
Weeks 3–6
Back to desk work
Many people return to light desk work after about 3–4 weeks; heavy lifting and strenuous exercise wait longer.
Weeks 6–12
Exercise and swelling
A gradual return to exercise once cleared. Swelling around the scar and in the legs can take several months to settle.
12–24 months
Final result
Scars mature and fade over about 18–24 months, and the contour keeps refining as swelling resolves.
Results and how long they last
Most patients see a flatter, tighter contour almost straight away, but swelling takes months to settle and the scars up to two years to mature. The removed skin does not come back, so results are long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable — regaining weight stretches the remaining skin again, and some loosening with age is normal. For many people the biggest gains are practical: clothes fit better, and skin folds that chafed or trapped moisture are gone.
Risks and how to reduce them
- Wound healing problems (dehiscence) — small separations along the long scar are common, especially where incisions meet; most heal with dressings
- Seroma — fluid collecting under the skin, sometimes needing repeated drainage with a needle
- Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism — a long operation and reduced mobility raise the risk; prevention includes compression, early walking and often blood thinners
- Infection, bleeding (haematoma) and areas of skin or fat necrosis
- Asymmetry, contour irregularities, widened or visible scars and recurrent looseness
- Numbness around the scar, persistent swelling in the legs and the possible need for revision surgery
Complication rates are higher than for most cosmetic operations
In one published series of 100 post-bariatric patients, 22% had a major and 56% a minor complication, most often wound-healing problems, and a higher BMI before surgery and smoking were linked to more problems. Reaching a stable weight, stopping smoking and correcting nutrition beforehand lower your risk the most.

Indicative 2026 ranges from Turkish package listings; they usually include surgery, anaesthesia, hospital nights, garments, hotel and transfers, but not flights.
Prices depend on how much skin is removed, whether the buttocks are augmented, the hospital and the nights included. Because seromas or wound problems can mean extra visits, ask for a written quote stating which aftercare and revision work are covered. For comparison, the ASPS reports an average US surgeon's fee of about $11,400 for a lower body lift, before anaesthesia and hospital costs. Choosing a clinic safely
- A full hospital with intensive-care backup, not a day-surgery clinic
- A specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery registered in Turkey, with regular experience of body contouring after weight loss — ask how many lower body lifts they perform
- A facility with the Ministry of Health's International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate (Uluslararası Sağlık Turizmi Yetki Belgesi)
- A clear blood-clot prevention plan covering the operation, the hospital stay and the flight home
- A written quote listing hospital nights, garments, drain care, follow-up and the revision policy
- Before-and-after photos of massive-weight-loss patients that show the full scar from the back
- Red flags: several major operations on one day without a frank risk discussion, no pre-operative blood tests, or pressure to book before your weight is stable
Plan a longer, flexible trip
Book 10–14 days in Turkey with a flexible return ticket, bring a companion if you can, and arrange for a doctor or nurse at home to check your wounds.
A body lift trades loose skin for a long scar. It works best for people whose weight has been stable for months, who have stopped smoking and who are ready for a slow recovery — rushing any of those steps is where most problems begin.

Frequently asked questions
A tummy tuck treats only the front of the abdomen. A lower body lift continues around the hips and back, lifting the buttocks and outer thighs too, so the scar goes all the way around the body.
Only once your weight has stabilised. Weight loss usually levels off 18–24 months after bariatric surgery, and surgeons generally want a stable weight for at least 6–12 months before body contouring.
Plan about 10–14 days. Drains usually come out after 7–10 days, and your surgeon should check the wounds before you fly, because a long flight soon after major surgery raises the risk of blood clots.
Expect a demanding first week. Pain is managed with prescribed medication, starting in hospital; tightness and limits on bending last around two weeks, and most people feel much more comfortable after that.
Sometimes, but combining several large operations lengthens the anaesthetic and raises the risk. Many surgeons do the lower body first and the arms, breasts or inner thighs in a second stage around six months later.
The scar runs around the whole body. It is planned to sit under underwear or swimwear at the front, but at the back it is visible without clothing. It fades over 18–24 months but never disappears.
Typical 2026 packages cost about €4,500–€8,000 for a lower body lift, and more when it is combined with other procedures. Check exactly how many hospital nights, garments and follow-up visits are included.
The removed skin is gone for good, but regaining weight or ageing can stretch the remaining skin. Keeping your weight stable is the key to a lasting result.
