A thigh lift (thighplasty) removes loose, sagging skin and some fat from the thighs and reshapes what remains. It is most often chosen after major weight loss, when inner-thigh skin hangs, rubs and does not respond to exercise. In Turkey, a typical package costs about €2,500–€4,500, and you should plan on 10–14 days there. Healing is more demanding than after most body-contouring operations.

What a thigh lift is and how it works

Exercise cannot lift skin stretched by large weight loss. In a thigh lift, a plastic surgeon removes a wedge of excess skin and fat, anchors the deeper tissues so the lift holds, and closes the skin under controlled tension. Where the incision goes depends on where the excess skin sits. The operation is done under general anaesthesia and usually takes 2–4 hours.

Thigh lift, liposuction or body lift?

If your skin is still elastic and the issue is mainly fat, liposuction alone may be the better choice — a thigh lift is not a fat-loss procedure. If loose skin also wraps around the hips, buttocks and abdomen, a lower body lift treats the outer thighs as part of one circular operation, and the inner thighs are usually addressed in a later stage.

Types of thigh lift

TypeWhere the scar goesBest suited to
Mini (short-scar) inner thigh liftA short scar in the groin creaseMild loose skin limited to the upper inner thigh
Inner (medial) thigh liftGroin crease, sometimes wrapping towards the buttock foldModerate loose skin concentrated in the upper third of the inner thigh
Extended (vertical) inner thigh liftGroin scar plus a vertical scar along the inner thigh towards the kneeSignificant loose skin along the whole inner thigh, usually after major weight loss
Outer (lateral) thigh liftFrom the groin around the hip, often continuing across the backLoose outer-thigh and hip skin, usually as part of a lower body lift

Liposuction is often combined with the lift; the pattern depends on where and how much loose skin you have.

Scar position is the key trade-off. A groin-crease scar is well hidden but can only lift a limited amount of skin; a vertical scar removes much more but runs down the inner thigh, where shorts will show it. Over time the groin scar can drift downwards and widen (scar migration), and too much pull can distort the outer labia. Anchoring the lift to the firm connective tissue of the groin (Colles' fascia) helps keep the scar in place.

Who is a good candidate

  • Adults with loose inner- or outer-thigh skin that exercise and weight control have not improved
  • People whose weight has been stable for at least 3–6 months — after bariatric surgery, weight loss usually levels off within 18–24 months
  • Non-smokers in good general health, with conditions such as diabetes well controlled
  • Anyone who accepts permanent scars and some risk of healing problems in exchange for a better contour

Who should wait or avoid it

  • People still losing weight or planning another major weight change
  • Anyone with existing leg swelling (lymphoedema) or significant vein problems, which surgeons treat as reasons not to operate
  • Patients with a BMI of 30 or more, who face a higher complication rate and may do better after further weight loss

The procedure step by step

1

Consultation and marking

The surgeon assesses your skin, reviews your weight history and marks the incisions with you standing, showing you where the scars will lie.

2

Pre-operative checks

Blood tests, a health review and, after bariatric surgery, a nutrition check, plus a plan to prevent blood clots.

3

Anaesthesia

General anaesthesia, given and monitored by an anaesthetist.

4

Liposuction and excision

Fat is often reduced with liposuction first; the marked skin is removed, the deep tissue anchored and the wound closed in layers, often over thin drains.

5

Hospital stay

You usually stay one to two nights and start walking early to lower the risk of blood clots.

Recovery timeline

  1. Days 1–3

    First steps

Thighs are sore, swollen and tight. You walk short distances early, wear compression and may have drains.

  2. Days 4–14

    Protecting the groin wound

Avoid wide leg movements, squatting and long sitting as instructed. Drains come out and wounds are checked before you are cleared to fly.

  3. Weeks 2–3

    Back to desk work

Many people return to office work, still avoiding strenuous activity; regular walking stays important.

  4. Week 6

    Compression off, exercise returns

Compression is usually worn for about six weeks; most people are back to normal daily activities and gradually restart exercise.

  5. Months 6–12+

    Final contour and scar fading

Swelling settles by around six months, and scars keep fading for a year or more.

Results and how long they last

The improved contour is visible soon after surgery, but the final result can take several months to settle. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes results as long-lasting provided you keep a stable weight and general fitness; some firmness is lost with age, and visible scars always remain. Because skin stretched by weight loss stays less elastic, some relaxation and scar migration are expected over time, and touch-up procedures are not unusual. If your upper arms are affected too, an arm lift is usually planned as a separate stage.

Risks and how to reduce them

  • Wound separation (dehiscence) and slow healing in the groin and inner thigh — the most common problem
  • Seroma or lymphocele (fluid collections) and leg swelling if lymphatic channels are disrupted
  • Scar migration and widening and, in women, distortion of the outer labia
  • Infection and bleeding (haematoma)
  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis) and heart or lung complications
  • Asymmetry, numbness, skin discoloration, recurrent loose skin or the need for revision surgery

A literature review of 447 medial thigh lift patients found complications in about 43%, mostly minor: wound separation in about 18%, seroma in about 8%, infection in about 5% and scar migration in about 4%, with no blood clots or sepsis reported. A 2025 review of 1,113 patients found that adding liposuction roughly halved the overall complication rate (about 37% vs 71%), while a BMI of 30 or more and older age raised it. Careful patient selection, sparing the lymphatic channels, anchoring the lift and walking early all reduce problems.

Plan for the wound, not just the operation

Wound problems can appear after you leave hospital, sometimes once you are home. Walk regularly, wear your compression garment and avoid straining the groin. Seek help quickly for fever, a wound that opens or leaks, increasing swelling, or calf pain or breathlessness, which can signal a blood clot. Fly only once your surgeon has cleared you.

Package contents differ between clinics, so compare quotes line by line.

These are indicative 2026 ranges, not fixed prices: a mini inner thigh lift sits at the lower end, while extended vertical lifts, outer-thigh work, added liposuction and premium hospitals cost more. Only a written quote after the surgeon has reviewed your case is meaningful. For comparison, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons puts the average US cost of a thigh lift at $7,641 — excluding anaesthesia, operating-room facilities and other related expenses. Choosing a clinic safely

  • Choose an accredited, licensed hospital with an anaesthetist and intensive-care back-up
  • Confirm that your surgeon is a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery registered in Turkey, with regular experience of body contouring after weight loss
  • Check that the clinic holds the Ministry of Health's International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate (Uluslararası Sağlık Turizmi Yetki Belgesi)
  • Get a written quote that covers aftercare, compression garments, wound-care visits, the revision policy and who looks after you once home
  • Ask for realistic before-and-after photos that show the scars
  • Red flags: promises of hidden or 'scarless' results, pressure to combine many operations in one long session, or no consultation with the surgeon before booking

Stage big transformations

After major weight loss, surgeons often stage body contouring — abdomen and lower body first, inner thighs last — to limit operating time and wound tension. The NHS also advises two consultations before any surgery abroad.

A thigh lift can transform comfort and confidence after major weight loss, but healing is the hard part. Choose a surgeon who plans your scars with you, keep your weight stable, and give your wounds the time they need before you fly.
