Full specialty guide
Breast augmentation is one of the most requested operations by international patients travelling to Turkey, drawn by experienced surgeons and prices well below the UK or EU. It is, however, real surgery under general anaesthetic — not a quick cosmetic fix — so it deserves the same care in choosing a surgeon as any operation back home.
What breast augmentation actually is
Augmentation adds volume and shape using a silicone or saline implant placed either under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle. It changes size and projection, but it does not lift a sagging breast — that is a separate procedure (mastopexy) and the two are often combined. A good result should look proportionate to your frame rather than simply bigger.
Implant types, shapes and profiles
| Option | What it means | Often chosen by |
|---|---|---|
| Silicone gel | Cohesive gel that feels close to natural tissue; the most common choice worldwide | Most patients, especially those with less natural breast tissue |
| Saline | Filled with sterile salt water after placement; slightly firmer feel | Patients wanting a smaller incision or lower implant cost |
| Round | Even fullness above and below with more upper-pole projection | Patients wanting a fuller, more obvious upper pole |
| Teardrop (anatomical) | Shaped to mimic a natural slope; a more subtle silhouette | Patients wanting a discreet, natural-looking result |
| Profile (low to extra-high) | How far the implant projects forward for a given base width | Matched to your chest width and goals by the surgeon |
Your surgeon should recommend a combination based on your measurements, not a one-size-fits-all package.
Who is a good candidate
- Physically healthy adults who have finished breast development
- Those unhappy with breast size, or with volume lost after weight change or breastfeeding
- Non-smokers, or those willing to stop for several weeks around surgery to protect healing
- People with realistic expectations who understand implants are not lifelong
- Not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with untreated breast disease
Step by step: the operation
Online consultation
You share photos and medical history; the surgeon suggests implant type, size and placement, and flags anything needing an in-person check.
Arrival and assessment
In Turkey you have a face-to-face examination, measurements, blood tests and an anaesthetic review before anything is confirmed.
Surgery under general anaesthetic
The operation usually takes one to two hours. The implant is placed through a discreet incision, most often in the natural breast fold.
Overnight monitoring
You normally stay one night in hospital so the team can watch for bleeding, pain and any early complication.
Review and discharge
A follow-up check, a surgical support bra and clear written aftercare before you return to your hotel.
Recovery, week by week
Days 1–2
Tight and sore
Expect pressure, swelling and limited arm movement. Pain is managed with medication and most people are up and walking the same day.
Week 1
Desk-ready
Many return to light, non-physical work. A surgical bra is worn continuously and heavy lifting is off-limits.
Weeks 2–4
Settling
Swelling eases and bruising fades. Light daily activity resumes, but no gym, running or lifting yet.
Weeks 4–6
Back to exercise
Most patients are cleared for a gradual return to exercise, and the implants begin to soften and drop into a natural position.
Months 3–6
Final result
Scars mature and fade and the breasts reach their settled shape and feel.
Results, longevity and revision

Most patients are highly satisfied, but honesty matters: implants are medical devices, not lifelong. Many people need a revision or replacement within 10–15 years, and sooner if a problem develops. Recognised risks include capsular contracture (firm scar tissue around the implant), rupture, rippling and asymmetry. Reputable manufacturers provide a warranty on the implants themselves — ask for it in writing.

Choosing a clinic safely
- Confirm your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon, not just a 'clinic' brand
- Ask for the exact implant brand and that it is CE-marked, with a written warranty and lot number
- Check the operation takes place in an accredited hospital, not an office suite
- Insist on a named surgeon who will actually perform your operation
- Ask what revision, complication and readmission cover is included if something goes wrong
- Be wary of prices far below the range, or pressure to decide today
Implants are not lifelong
Capsular contracture and rupture are real risks, and most implants need revision over time. Cut-price all-inclusive deals can hide unaccredited theatres or unnamed surgeons. A long-haul flight soon after surgery also raises the risk of DVT (blood clots) — plan to stay 5–7 days and get medical clearance before flying home.
Medical disclaimer
This page is general information, not medical advice. Only a qualified surgeon who examines you in person can confirm whether augmentation is suitable and which implant, size and placement are right for you.
A good augmentation looks proportionate to your frame, not simply bigger — and a good surgeon will talk you out of a size that won't age well.
