Полное руководство по специальности
Turkey has become one of the world's busiest destinations for gastric sleeve surgery, drawing tens of thousands of international patients each year. The appeal is real: experienced high-volume surgeons, modern accredited hospitals and all-inclusive packages that cost a fraction of UK or EU prices. But a sleeve is not a cosmetic quick fix — it is a permanent change to your anatomy and a lifelong commitment. This guide explains what the operation actually involves, what results are realistic, and how to choose a clinic you can trust.
What gastric sleeve surgery is and how it works
In a sleeve gastrectomy the surgeon removes roughly 75–80% of the stomach, leaving a narrow, banana-shaped tube. The operation is done laparoscopically (keyhole), through a few small incisions. It works in two ways: the smaller stomach physically limits how much you can eat, and removing the upper part of the stomach lowers production of ghrelin, the main hunger hormone — so most patients feel genuinely less hungry. Because stomach tissue is removed, the procedure cannot be reversed.
How the sleeve compares with other weight-loss procedures
| Procedure | How it works | Reversible? | Typical excess weight lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gastric sleeve | Removes ~80% of the stomach | No — permanent | Around 60–70% |
| Gastric bypass | Small pouch + reroutes intestine | Difficult, rarely done | Around 65–75% |
| Gastric band | Adjustable silicone band | Yes | Around 40–50% |
| Gastric balloon | Temporary balloon, non-surgical | Yes — removed at 6–12 months | Around 10–15% of body weight |
Figures are typical ranges at 1–2 years and vary widely with diet and follow-up.
Who is a suitable candidate
- Adults with a BMI of 40 or above, or a BMI of 35+ alongside a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea
- People who have tried supervised diet and lifestyle changes without lasting success
- Patients able and willing to take vitamin and mineral supplements for life and attend long-term follow-up
- Those without untreated eating disorders, whose surgical risk has been assessed as acceptable
- Reputable clinics decline patients for whom surgery is unsafe or unlikely to help — being turned down can be a sign of good practice, not bad service
The procedure step by step

Remote assessment
You share your height, weight, medical history and recent blood tests. The clinic's team confirms whether you are a candidate before you travel.
Arrival and pre-op checks
On arrival you have blood tests, an ECG, an ultrasound or endoscopy and a review by the surgeon and anaesthetist — usually the day before surgery.
The operation
Under general anaesthetic, the surgeon removes most of the stomach laparoscopically and staples the remaining sleeve. It typically takes 60–90 minutes.
Early recovery in hospital
You stay 2–3 nights. You are encouraged to walk within hours to reduce clot risk, and a leak test may be done before you start clear fluids.
Discharge and return home
After a hotel recovery period and a final check, most patients fly home around day 5–7 on a staged liquid diet, with a written plan and supplement list.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
In hospital
Clear then free fluids only. Walking is encouraged. Some pain, nausea and shoulder-tip discomfort from the gas used in surgery are normal.
Week 1
Liquid diet
You stay on liquids and protein shakes. Rest, sip constantly to avoid dehydration, and avoid flying until your surgeon clears you (usually after day 7–10).
Weeks 2–4
Pureed and soft foods
You gradually move to pureed then soft foods, in tiny portions. Most people return to desk work within 1–2 weeks.
Weeks 4–6
Back to normal activity
Light exercise resumes and solid foods are reintroduced slowly. Chewing thoroughly and stopping when full become lifelong habits.
Months 3–18
Main weight-loss phase
The fastest loss happens in the first 6–12 months and continues more slowly to around 18 months, supported by supplements and follow-up bloods.
Results and how lasting they are
Most patients lose around 60–70% of their excess weight within 12–18 months, which usually means losing roughly a quarter to a third of their starting body weight. Many see weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure improve or, in some cases, go into remission. But the sleeve is a tool, not a cure: results depend heavily on permanent changes to diet and activity. Some weight regain after the first two years is common, and a minority of patients develop or worsen acid reflux, occasionally needing conversion to a bypass. Honest clinics set realistic expectations rather than promising a specific number on the scales.
Cost in Turkey and what's included
Turkey's low prices reflect lower staff and facility costs, a favourable exchange rate and the sheer volume of procedures performed — not cheaper implants, staplers or lower-grade materials, which are typically the same international brands used in the UK. A gastric sleeve package in Turkey generally ranges from €2,800 to €4,500.
| Item | Typical range (all-inclusive package) |
|---|---|
| Surgeon and operating theatre fees | €1,600–€2,600 |
| Hospital stay (2–3 nights) and anaesthesia | €500–€900 |
| Pre-op tests, hotel, transfers and translator | €400–€700 |
| Total gastric sleeve package | €2,800–€4,500 |

Choosing a clinic safely
- Check that the hospital is accredited (for example JCI) and that the surgeon is board-certified in bariatric or general surgery with high annual volumes
- Insist on a proper pre-operative work-up — blood tests, endoscopy or ultrasound and an anaesthetic review — not just a quick photo assessment
- Ask exactly what the package includes and excludes, and get it in writing before you pay
- Confirm what happens if there is a complication — who covers extended hospital stays, and what aftercare and 24/7 contact you get once home
- Be wary of clinics that guarantee a specific weight loss, pressure you to decide immediately, or offer prices far below the market
A permanent operation, not a quick fix
A sleeve permanently removes most of your stomach and cannot be undone. Be cautious of any clinic that downplays the risks, skips a full medical assessment, or markets surgery like a holiday deal. Rare but serious complications — including a staple-line leak, bleeding or blood clots — are real, and you should understand them before committing.
Medical disclaimer
This guide is general information, not medical advice. Whether a gastric sleeve is right for you depends on your individual health, BMI and history, and can only be decided by a qualified doctor after a personal assessment. Always consult a licensed bariatric specialist before making any decision.
The best outcomes come from patients who treat surgery as the start of a lifelong change, not the finish line — and from clinics honest enough to say so.
