A gastric band is the least invasive of the main weight-loss surgeries: an adjustable silicone ring is placed around the top of the stomach, with nothing cut away or rerouted. It is fully reversible and carries a lower immediate risk than a sleeve or bypass. However, it produces less weight loss on average, relies on regular adjustments, and has a high rate of long-term reoperation — which is why many surgeons and centres now use it far less than they once did. If you are considering a band in Turkey, it is essential to understand these trade-offs honestly.
What a gastric band is and how it works
An adjustable gastric band (sometimes called a LAP-BAND) is a soft silicone ring placed around the upper stomach to create a small pouch above it. This limits how much you can eat and helps you feel full sooner. The band is connected by fine tubing to a small port placed just under the skin; a doctor can inject or remove saline through this port to tighten or loosen the band. Nothing is stapled, cut or removed, so the procedure can be reversed by taking the band out.
How the band compares with other options
| Procedure | Invasiveness | Reversible? | Typical excess weight lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gastric band | Lowest — no cutting or stapling | Yes | Around 40–50% |
| Gastric sleeve | Moderate — removes stomach | No — permanent | Around 60–70% |
| Gastric bypass | Highest — reroutes intestine | Difficult, rarely reversed | Around 65–75% |
| Gastric balloon | Non-surgical, temporary | Yes — removed at 6–12 months | Around 10–15% of body weight |
Band results depend heavily on regular adjustments and follow-up, which are harder to arrange abroad.
Who is a suitable candidate
- Adults with a BMI of 40 or above, or 35+ with a weight-related condition, who prefer a reversible option
- People who want to avoid the permanent changes of a sleeve or the rerouting of a bypass
- Patients who can realistically attend regular band adjustments — ideally with a bariatric team close to home
- Those willing to eat slowly, chew well and avoid soft high-calorie foods that slip past the band
- People who understand the band's lower average weight loss and higher chance of needing further surgery
The procedure step by step

Remote assessment
You share your weight, BMI, medical history and goals. The team also checks you can realistically attend the ongoing adjustments the band needs.
Arrival and pre-op checks
Blood tests, an ECG and a surgeon and anaesthetist review confirm you are fit for a short laparoscopic procedure.
The operation
Under general anaesthetic, the band is placed around the upper stomach and the port fixed under the skin, laparoscopically. It usually takes 30–60 minutes.
Early recovery in hospital
Recovery is quicker than a sleeve or bypass; many patients stay only 1–2 nights before a hotel recovery period.
First adjustment and aftercare
The band is left empty at first. The initial fill is usually done a few weeks later, then adjusted over months — ideally by a bariatric team near where you live.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–2
In hospital
A short stay with early walking. Discomfort is usually milder than after a sleeve or bypass, as no stomach is removed.
Week 1
Liquid diet
You keep to fluids and protein while the stomach settles, and avoid flying until your surgeon clears you.
Weeks 2–4
Soft foods
You move through pureed to soft foods. The band is still empty, so you rely mainly on smaller portions at this stage.
Weeks 4–8
First adjustments begin
Saline fills gradually tighten the band to find your sweet spot. This is where local, ongoing follow-up becomes essential.
Months 3–12
Gradual weight loss
Weight comes off more slowly and steadily than with a sleeve or bypass, and depends on repeated fine-tuning of the band.
Results and how lasting they are
On average, gastric band patients lose around 40–50% of their excess weight, noticeably less than a sleeve or bypass, and results depend heavily on frequent adjustments and close follow-up. Long-term data has been disappointing for many: a significant proportion of bands are eventually removed because of slippage, erosion, port problems or inadequate weight loss, and some patients later convert to a sleeve or bypass. This is why the band has fallen out of favour in many countries. It can still suit motivated patients who value reversibility and can commit to ongoing care — but honest expectations matter.
Cost in Turkey and what's included
As with other procedures, Turkey's lower prices come from reduced staffing and facility costs, exchange rates and high volumes — not from cheaper bands, which are typically the same international brands used in the UK and EU. A gastric band package in Turkey generally ranges from €2,500 to €4,000, but remember that ongoing adjustments back home may add to the true long-term cost.
| Item | Typical range (all-inclusive package) |
|---|---|
| Surgeon and operating theatre fees | €1,400–€2,300 |
| Hospital stay (1–2 nights) and anaesthesia | €500–€900 |
| Pre-op tests, hotel, transfers and translator | €400–€800 |
| Total gastric band package | €2,500–€4,000 |

Choosing a clinic safely
- Check the hospital is accredited (such as JCI) and the surgeon is an experienced bariatric specialist
- Ask directly how you will get band adjustments after you return home, and what they will cost — this is the band's biggest practical weakness
- Get all inclusions, exclusions and the total price in writing before paying
- Confirm who is responsible if the band slips, erodes or needs removal later
- Ask what happens if the band does not deliver enough weight loss and conversion surgery is needed
- Be cautious of clinics pushing a band simply because it is cheaper or quicker, without discussing its limitations
Lower results and a real follow-up problem
The band gives less weight loss than other procedures and needs regular adjustments that are hard to arrange after flying home. Bands can also slip or erode, and a notable share are eventually removed. Be wary of any clinic that promotes the band as an easy option without a clear plan for your long-term adjustments and aftercare.
Medical disclaimer
This guide is general information, not medical advice. Whether a gastric band is right for you depends on your individual health, BMI and history, and can only be decided by a qualified doctor after a personal assessment. Always consult a licensed bariatric specialist before making any decision.
The band's great strength is that it is reversible — but its results live or die by the follow-up, so plan your adjustments before you plan your trip.
