Bariatric surgery — weight-loss surgery — changes the size or routing of your stomach and gut so you feel full sooner and absorb fewer calories. It is considered when serious obesity has not responded to sustained diet, exercise and medical treatment, and when excess weight is driving conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. It is a major operation and a lifelong commitment, not a shortcut.
How weight-loss surgery works
Almost all bariatric operations in Turkey are done laparoscopically — through a few small incisions using a camera and slim instruments, rather than one large cut. You are under general anaesthesia throughout. Depending on the procedure the surgery takes roughly 1 to 3 hours, followed by 1 to 3 nights in hospital so the team can watch for early complications before you are discharged.
Sleeve, bypass or mini bypass
There is no single 'best' operation — the right choice depends on your weight, your health conditions, reflux history and what your surgeon judges safest for you. The three most common procedures work differently:

Am I eligible?
Eligibility rests mainly on body mass index (BMI) and your health conditions. As a general guide, surgery is considered for a BMI of 40 or above, or 35 or above when obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or obstructive sleep apnoea are present. Some patients with poorly controlled diabetes may qualify at a lower BMI. These are thresholds, not guarantees.
Eligibility is decided case by case
BMI numbers are a starting point, not the whole picture. A proper assessment weighs your medical history, previous weight-loss attempts, mental readiness and surgical risk. A responsible clinic will sometimes say no — or recommend a different procedure than the one you asked for.
Recovery and the diet stages
Days 1–3
Hospital and clear liquids
You are up and walking within hours to reduce clot risk. Diet starts with water and clear fluids while the team confirms there is no leak.
Weeks 1–2
Full liquids
Soups, milk and protein drinks. Portions are tiny and sipped slowly. Most desk workers take this stretch off work.
Weeks 3–4
Puréed food
Smooth, blended meals. Many people return to light or desk work around now, roughly two weeks after surgery.
Weeks 5–6
Soft food
Soft, easily chewed foods in small amounts. Physical or manual jobs usually wait until four weeks or more.
Month 2 onward
Small solid meals for life
You move to regular textures but permanently smaller portions, chewing well and prioritising protein. Weight comes off fastest in the first 6–12 months.

Turkey's prices are lower because clinic overheads, staff costs and the currency are lower, and because high-volume bariatric centres spread fixed costs across many cases — not because the surgery is inferior. The same laparoscopic equipment and international safety standards used in Western Europe are available here. The saving is real; treat it as one factor, never the deciding one.
Aftercare is lifelong — plan for it before you fly
The surgery is a tool, not a cure
Bariatric surgery only works long term alongside permanent changes to how you eat, plus lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements and regular blood tests. Skipping follow-up risks serious deficiencies (iron, B12, calcium, vitamin D) and weight regain. Because you travel home afterwards, agree before surgery who monitors your bloods, prescribes supplements and handles any complication in your own country.
Risks and choosing safely
- Staple-line or anastomotic leak — uncommon, but the most serious early complication, which is why the hospital observation period matters.
- Acid reflux — can appear or worsen after a sleeve; bypass is sometimes chosen instead for this reason.
- Nutritional deficiencies — a lifelong risk, especially after bypass; managed with supplements and monitoring, never ignored.
- Blood clots, bleeding, infection, gallstones and, in some people, the need for revision surgery.
Choose on the surgeon, not the sticker price. Confirm the operating surgeon's name and bariatric credentials in writing, ask how many of your specific procedure they perform a year, and make sure emergency cover and structured follow-up are spelled out. Be wary of any clinic promising a fixed weight-loss figure or pushing you toward surgery without a real assessment.
