Guida completa alla specialità
Turkey has become one of Europe's busiest destinations for laser eye surgery, and LASIK remains the most widely performed procedure. For people tired of glasses or contact lenses, the appeal is obvious: a short, well-established operation at a fraction of UK or Western European prices. The real question, though, is not *where* to have it — it is *whether your eyes are a suitable candidate in the first place*.
What is LASIK and how does it work?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) gently reshapes the cornea — the clear front window of the eye — so that light focuses correctly on the retina. The surgeon creates a thin hinged flap in the cornea, lifts it, uses an excimer laser to remove microscopic layers of tissue, then folds the flap back where it heals without stitches. It can correct short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism within defined limits.
LASIK compared with other laser and lens options
| Procedure | How it differs | Often suited to |
|---|---|---|
| LASIK | Corneal flap plus excimer-laser reshaping | Stable prescriptions with adequate corneal thickness |
| SMILE | Flapless, small keyhole incision | Myopia and drier or thinner-corneal eyes |
| PRK / LASEK | Surface treatment, no flap created | Thinner corneas or contact-sport lifestyles |
| Smart Lens (RLE) | Replaces the eye's own natural lens | Higher prescriptions or presbyopia over 45 |
Only a pre-operative eye exam can confirm which technique is safe for your eyes.
Who is a good candidate for LASIK?
- Adults over 18 with a stable prescription for at least 12 months
- A refractive error within the treatable range (roughly up to -10 dioptres of myopia, less for hyperopia)
- Adequate corneal thickness, confirmed by corneal mapping (topography)
- Healthy eyes, free of significant dry eye, keratoconus, cataract or uncontrolled glaucoma
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding, as hormonal changes can shift your prescription
- Realistic expectations — reducing dependence on glasses, not a promise of perfect lifelong vision
The LASIK procedure, step by step

Detailed eye assessment
Corneal thickness, pupil size, tear film and a full refraction are measured. This exam decides whether LASIK, another laser, or no surgery at all is right for you.
Numbing drops
Anaesthetic eye drops are applied. LASIK is performed awake; there is no general anaesthesia and you feel pressure rather than pain.
Creating the flap
A femtosecond laser forms the thin corneal flap, which the surgeon carefully lifts.
Laser reshaping
The excimer laser reshapes the cornea in seconds, guided by your personalised measurements.
Repositioning the flap
The flap is smoothed back into place and begins to seal almost immediately — no stitches are needed.
Same-day discharge
After a short rest and a quick check, you return to your hotel with protective shields and prescribed drops.
Recovery timeline
Day 0
Surgery day
Vision is blurry and eyes may water or sting for a few hours. Rest with eyes closed; most discomfort settles by the evening.
Day 1
First follow-up
A crucial post-operative check confirms the flap has settled. Many patients already see well enough for everyday tasks.
Days 2–4
Rapid improvement
Vision sharpens noticeably. Avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming and dusty environments.
Weeks 1–4
Stabilising
Night glare and dryness gradually ease. Continue lubricating drops exactly as advised.
Months 1–3
Final result
Vision fully stabilises. Any top-up (enhancement), if ever needed, is usually considered only after this point.
Results and how long they last
For suitable candidates, LASIK usually produces a lasting reduction in dependence on glasses, and most patients reach driving-standard vision or better. The corneal reshaping itself is permanent. It does not, however, stop the natural ageing of the eye: many people still need reading glasses from their mid-forties as presbyopia develops, and a small proportion need an enhancement procedure. Honest clinics quote enhancement rates rather than promising flawless vision for life.
Cost of LASIK in Turkey and what's included
Headline prices in Turkey typically run from €1,000 to €2,500 for both eyes — well below UK levels. Turkey is more affordable mainly because of lower staffing and facility costs, a favourable exchange rate and very high patient volumes, not because of inferior lasers; leading clinics use the same equipment platforms found across Europe.
| Item | Typical range (both eyes) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard LASIK | €1,000–€1,600 | Established laser platforms |
| Wavefront / custom LASIK | €1,500–€2,200 | Personalised treatment maps |
| Bladeless femto-LASIK | €1,800–€2,500 | All-laser flap creation |
| Pre-op exam & follow-ups | Often included | Confirm before booking |

Choosing a clinic safely
- Confirm the surgeon is a qualified ophthalmologist (eye specialist), not a technician, and ask how many LASIK cases they perform
- Insist on a full pre-operative exam, including corneal topography, before any price is fixed
- Check that the clinic will see you in person for the Day 1 follow-up before you fly home
- Ask which laser platform is used and whether it is current
- Get the enhancement policy in writing — who pays if a top-up is later needed
- Be wary of any quote given without ever examining your eyes
Red flag: surgery promised before an eye exam
No responsible clinic can confirm you are suitable for LASIK from photos or an online form alone. Adequate corneal thickness and a stable prescription are non-negotiable. If a provider guarantees a specific outcome, offers surgery the same day you land with no proper topography, or brushes aside conditions like dry eye or keratoconus, treat it as a serious warning sign.
Medical disclaimer
This guide is general information, not medical advice. Suitability for LASIK can only be decided by a qualified ophthalmologist after an in-person examination of your specific eyes. Always seek an individual assessment before making any treatment decision.
Laser eye surgery is elective — the goal is not the cheapest procedure, but the right procedure for eyes that genuinely qualify. A thorough pre-operative exam protects your sight far more than any discount.
