When a tooth is too broken, decayed or heavily filled to be saved by a simple filling, a crown rebuilds it — and in Turkey, zirconia crowns have become the workhorse of that job. Prized for their strength and natural colour, they cap a tooth completely and let it function again for years. Turkey's price and quality combination draws patients from across Europe, but a crown involves real tooth removal, so it should be chosen because a tooth needs it — not simply because it is on offer.

What a dental crown is

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. Unlike a veneer, which only faces the front, a crown encases the whole tooth after it has been trimmed down on all sides. It is the standard restoration after a root canal, a large fracture, extensive decay or as the anchor for a bridge. Because more tooth structure is removed than for a veneer, a crown is used when protection — not just appearance — is the goal.

Crown materials compared

MaterialStrengthBest for
Monolithic zirconiaVery highMolars and back teeth, grinders, bridges
Layered zirconiaHigh, more translucentFront and premolar teeth needing both strength and looks
E-max (lithium disilicate)Moderate–highHighly aesthetic single front crowns
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)HighOlder option; can show a grey line at the gum over time

Zirconia is chosen for strength where bite forces are high; E-max is favoured for front-tooth translucency.

Who is a good candidate

  • People with a cracked, broken or heavily decayed tooth beyond a filling
  • Anyone who has had a root canal, which leaves a tooth brittle and in need of coverage
  • Those needing an abutment crown to support a bridge
  • Patients wanting to restore a worn or misshapen back tooth to full function
  • People with healthy gums and no untreated infection at the tooth

The step-by-step process

1

Assessment and X-ray

The dentist confirms the tooth genuinely needs a crown, checks for infection and rules out a more conservative fix where possible.

2

Tooth preparation

Under local anaesthetic the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. A digital scan or impression is sent to the lab.

3

Temporary crown

A provisional crown protects the prepared tooth while the permanent zirconia crown is milled and finished.

4

Fitting the final crown

The zirconia crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then permanently cemented in place.

Recovery and settling in

  1. Days 1–3

    Initial sensitivity

Some tenderness and sensitivity around the tooth are common, especially after a recent root canal, and usually ease quickly.

  2. Week 1

    Bite check

Your bite adjusts to the new crown; a quick review can smooth any high spot before you travel home.

  3. Weeks 2–4

    Back to normal

The crown feels like a natural tooth and you can eat normally again.

  4. Ongoing

    Daily care

Brush and floss around the crown as usual and keep up regular check-ups to protect the underlying tooth.

Results and how long they last

Zirconia crowns are among the most durable restorations available and rarely chip, thanks to the strength of the material. Studies commonly report survival of around 90–95% at 5–10 years, and many crowns last well beyond that with good care. The crown protects what remains of the natural tooth, though the tooth underneath can still decay at the margins if hygiene slips — so the crown lasting is not the same as the tooth being invincible. Regular cleaning and reviews are what keep both healthy.

Choosing a clinic safely

  • Ask the dentist to justify the crown — could a filling, inlay or veneer do the job with less tooth loss?
  • Confirm the zirconia type (monolithic for strength, layered for looks) and the lab used
  • Check that any needed root canal, core or graft is priced transparently, not added later
  • Insist on a written guarantee (commonly 5–10 years) covering the crown
  • Prefer clinics using digital scanning for a precise, comfortable fit
  • Be cautious of plans that crown many healthy teeth at once purely for a uniform look

A crown should protect a tooth, not just whiten a smile

Crowns are the right answer for damaged, root-treated or heavily filled teeth. They are the wrong answer when healthy front teeth are trimmed down all round simply to change their colour — that is what conservative veneers or whitening are for. Crowning sound teeth removes far more structure than necessary and can stress the nerve. If a full arch of healthy teeth is being crowned for cosmetics, pause and get a second opinion.

Medical disclaimer

This guide is general information, not personal medical advice. Whether a tooth needs a crown, and which material is best, can only be determined by a qualified dentist after an in-person examination and X-rays. Always seek an individual assessment before agreeing to irreversible treatment.

A well-made zirconia crown can give a damaged tooth a second life — but the best dentistry only crowns a tooth that genuinely needs the protection.
