A patchy, thin or scarred beard is one of the most common reasons men travel to Turkey for hair restoration. A beard transplant moves permanent follicles from your scalp to the face to fill gaps, sharpen a jawline or connect a moustache to the cheeks. Done well it looks entirely natural; done badly it looks like a doll's beard. The single biggest difference between the two is not the number of grafts — it is the angle and direction in which each hair is placed.

What is a beard transplant and how does it work?

A beard transplant is an FUE procedure applied to the face. Follicular units are extracted one by one from a donor area — usually the back of the scalp, where hair is genetically permanent — and implanted into the beard region. Facial hair grows at a much sharper, flatter angle than scalp hair, so the surgeon places mostly single-hair grafts along the edges and cheeks for a soft, natural line, using two-hair units only where more density is safe. Getting that angle right is what separates a convincing beard from an obvious one.

Most full beard cases use around **1,000–3,000 grafts** in total — fewer than a scalp transplant.

Who is a beard transplant suitable for?

  • Men with patchy, thin or absent beard growth who have a healthy scalp donor area
  • Those wanting to shape or define an existing beard, jawline or moustache
  • Men camouflaging scars from acne, surgery, injury or cleft-lip repair
  • Trans men seeking facial-hair masculinisation with a stable donor supply
  • Realistic candidates who understand results depend on donor quality, not just how many grafts are placed

1

Design & consultation

The surgeon draws the beard shape with you, agrees the density and graft plan, and checks your scalp donor supply.

2

Local anaesthesia

The donor and facial areas are numbed. The procedure is awake and generally well tolerated.

3

Graft extraction

Single- and double-hair units are harvested from the scalp with a micro-punch and kept in preservation solution.

4

Angled implantation

Each graft is placed at the sharp, flat angle facial hair naturally grows in — the key to a natural look.

5

Aftercare briefing

You are shown how to protect the face, sleep, and manage crusting over the first days.

Recovery — what to expect

  1. Days 1–5

    Crusting & redness

Tiny scabs form around each implanted hair and the face looks red and slightly swollen. Avoid touching or picking the area.

  2. Days 7–10

    Scabs clear

Crusts fall away and redness fades. Many men feel presentable enough to return to normal life and travel home.

  3. Weeks 2–4

    Shock loss

The transplanted hairs shed — expected shock loss. The follicles remain and will regrow. The beard looks 'gone' temporarily.

  4. Months 3–6

    Regrowth

New facial hairs emerge and thicken. You can begin trimming and shaping as they come in.

  5. Months 9–12

    Full beard

Density matures and the beard behaves like natural facial hair. Judge the final result at around 12 months.

Results and permanence — honestly

Because the follicles come from permanent scalp donor hair, a transplanted beard is permanent — it grows continuously and you shave, trim and style it like any beard (in fact it needs regular trimming). But density is limited by your donor supply and the need to keep angles natural, so a beard transplant thickens and shapes rather than manufacturing a thick beard from nothing. Most men achieve their goal in one session; occasionally a small top-up is done later for extra density. Be cautious of clinics promising a dramatically dense beard from a very high graft count — over-packing the face can look unnatural and stress the grafts.

To judge the full result

Choosing a clinic safely

  • Confirm the surgeon designs the shape and controls the angle of implantation — this matters even more on the face
  • Ask for genuine beard before-and-after cases (not scalp results) at a similar starting point
  • Check they will protect your scalp donor and give a realistic graft number in writing
  • Look for good hygiene, accreditation and a named contact for aftercare
  • Treat promises of an extremely thick beard from a huge graft count as a red flag

Wrong angle, unnatural beard

Facial hair sits at a sharp, downward angle; grafts placed at the wrong angle or packed too densely produce a stiff, doll-like or pluggy beard that is very hard to fix. This is a technique-sensitive procedure — choose a surgeon with a strong portfolio of natural beard results, not just a low price.

Medical disclaimer

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Suitability, graft numbers and results depend on your donor quality, facial-hair pattern and health. Always seek a personalised assessment from a qualified surgeon before deciding.

A natural beard transplant is judged by its angles, not its graft count. The art is placing each hair the way it would have grown — subtle, directional and never overstuffed.
