Ghid complet al specialității
Turkey performs more hair transplants than anywhere else in the world, and FUE is the technique behind most of them. For men and women with a receding hairline, a thinning crown or a scar to camouflage, the appeal is simple: a permanent result using your own hair, at a fraction of UK or EU prices. The savings are real — driven by lower labour costs, a competitive clinic market and a favourable exchange rate — but the right clinic and realistic expectations matter far more than the headline price.
What is FUE and how does it work?
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) removes individual follicular units — natural groupings of 1–4 hairs — one at a time from a donor area at the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is genetically resistant to balding. Each unit is harvested with a tiny rotary or manual punch (roughly 0.7–1.0 mm), then implanted into channels created in the thinning area. Because follicles are taken individually rather than as a strip, FUE leaves no linear scar — only tiny dot marks that fade and are hidden by surrounding hair.
FUE techniques and variants
| Approach | How it differs | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Manual / micromotor FUE | Steel punch extraction; channels opened with steel blades or needles | Standard, cost-effective coverage |
| Sapphire FUE | Same extraction; channels cut with sapphire blades for finer, denser placement | Natural hairlines, higher density |
| DHI (Choi pen) | Extraction and implantation combined in one pen — no pre-cut channels | No-shave cases, precise angling |
A **graft** is a follicular unit, not a single hair — 2,000–2,500 grafts often means 4,000–6,000 hairs.
Who is FUE suitable for?
- Men with male-pattern hair loss who have a stable, healthy donor area at the back of the scalp
- Women with thinning along the part line or traction alopecia (often without shaving the recipient area)
- Anyone wanting to camouflage a scar from surgery, injury or an older strip (FUT) transplant
- People whose hair loss has largely stabilised — very early, actively progressing loss may need medical treatment first
- Realistic candidates who understand a transplant redistributes existing hair rather than creating new hair
The FUE procedure step by step

Consultation & planning
The surgeon assesses your donor density, maps a natural hairline and agrees a realistic graft number — usually in a face-to-face or detailed photo review before you travel.
Donor shaving & anaesthesia
The donor (and often recipient) area is trimmed and numbed with local anaesthetic. The procedure is awake and largely painless once numb.
Graft extraction
Follicular units are harvested one by one with a micro-punch and kept in a chilled preservation solution to stay viable.
Channel creation
Tiny incisions are opened at the correct angle, depth and direction — the single biggest factor in how natural the result looks.
Implantation
Grafts are placed into the channels: single-hair units at the hairline and denser multi-hair units behind them for depth.
Recovery — what to expect week by week
Days 1–3
Swelling & scabbing
Mild forehead swelling and tiny scabs around each graft are normal. Most clinics do a first wash on day 2–3 and give detailed aftercare.
Days 7–10
Scabs clear
Scabs fall away and redness settles. Many people feel comfortable returning to work or flying home by now.
Weeks 2–4
Shock loss
Transplanted hairs shed — this shock loss is expected and not a failure. The follicles remain and will regrow.
Months 3–6
New growth begins
Fine new hairs start to appear and gradually thicken. Progress is uneven across the scalp at this stage.
Months 9–12
Full result
Density and texture mature. The final result is judged at around 12 months, sometimes up to 18 for the crown.
Results and permanence — honestly
Transplanted follicles are taken from DHT-resistant donor hair, so once they regrow they are permanent: they grow, grey and can be cut like the rest of your hair. But a transplant moves a finite resource — it cannot give you the density of a teenager, and no ethical surgeon promises 'full coverage' from a limited donor. Most patients achieve a natural, satisfying improvement in one session; very large areas or ongoing loss may need a second session later, or medication (such as finasteride or minoxidil) to protect the hair you still have. Be sceptical of anyone quoting a precise success percentage — follicle survival is high in good hands, but it is an estimate, not a guarantee.

Choosing a clinic safely
- Confirm the surgeon — not just technicians — plans your hairline and performs or directly supervises the critical steps
- Ask how many grafts are realistically achievable from your donor, and get the number in writing
- Look for genuine, verifiable before-and-after cases at a similar stage of loss to yours
- Check hygiene, accreditation and that you will have a named point of contact for aftercare
- Treat 'unlimited grafts' offers and prices that seem too good to be true as red flags
Beware over-harvesting
Extracting too many grafts in one session can permanently thin the donor area, leaving a patchy back and sides that is very hard to correct. A responsible clinic protects your donor for the long term rather than maximising a single result — if you feel pushed toward a very high graft count, get a second opinion.
Medical disclaimer
This guide is general information, not medical advice. Suitability, graft numbers and expected outcomes vary with your individual hair loss, donor quality and health. Always seek a personalised assessment from a qualified surgeon before making any decision.
A hair transplant is a redistribution of a limited resource, not a cure for baldness. The best outcomes come from honest planning, a protected donor area and patience through the first year.
