What is a beard transplant and how does it work?

A beard transplant is an FUE procedure applied to the face. Follicular units are extracted one by one from a donor area — usually the back of the scalp, where hair is genetically permanent — and implanted into the beard region. Facial hair grows at a much sharper, flatter angle than scalp hair, so the surgeon places mostly single-hair grafts along the edges and cheeks for a soft, natural line, using two-hair units only where more density is safe. Recovery — what to expect

1. Days 1–5

   Crusting & redness

   Tiny scabs form around each implanted hair and the face looks red and slightly swollen. Avoid touching or picking the area.

2. Days 7–10

   Scabs clear

   Crusts fall away and redness fades. Many men feel presentable enough to return to normal life and travel home.

3. Weeks 2–4

   Shock loss

   The transplanted hairs shed — expected shock loss. The follicles remain and will regrow. The beard looks 'gone' temporarily.

4. Months 3–6

   Regrowth

   New facial hairs emerge and thicken. You can begin trimming and shaping as they come in.

5. Months 9–12

   Full beard

   Density matures and the beard behaves like natural facial hair. Judge the final result at around 12 months.

Results and permanence — honestly

Because the follicles come from permanent scalp donor hair, a transplanted beard is permanent — it grows continuously and you shave, trim and style it like any beard (in fact it needs regular trimming). But density is limited by your donor supply and the need to keep angles natural, so a beard transplant thickens and shapes rather than manufacturing a thick beard from nothing. Most men achieve their goal in one session; occasionally a small top-up is done later for extra density. Be cautious of clinics promising a dramatically dense beard from a very high graft count — over-packing the face can look unnatural and stress the grafts.
